Joseph Maurice Ravel [n 1] (7 March 1875 – 28 December 1937) was a French composer, pianist and conductor. He is often associated with Impressionism along with his elder contemporary Claude Debussy, although both composers rejected the term.

Despite his deep understanding of the piano and of the orchestra, Ravel never considered himself either a pianist or a conductor. In the wings for a performance as soloist in his G-major concerto, he supposedly remarked to the conductor, "What a pity. Now it will all be ruined."

It is Ravel’s most famous piece. It may well be the most frequently played and recorded orchestral composition of the 20th century.
