A Night at Birdland, Vols. 1 & 2 are a pair of separate but related live albums by the Art Blakey Quintet. They were recorded at the Birdland jazz club on February 21, 1954 and released on Blue Note in 1956. The night of the recording, Blakey tracked down Birdland’s soprano-voiced emcee, William “Pee Wee” Marquette, and they made a deal: “Art gave Pee Wee a couple of dollars,” Donaldson said, “and told him to announce the band as the Art Blakey All-Stars, instead of the Blue Note All-Stars.
