The album was released in June 1989 (almost a year after the theatrical release of The Last Temptation of Christ in August 1988) as a vinyl double album and a 1-disc CD. Passion is seen as a landmark in the popularisation of world music, and won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 1990.

Built on a foundation of Middle Eastern and North African rhythms and melodies, it was Real World Records’ first album, and featured many artists who would subsequently release music on the newly established label.

Released a year after Martin Scorsese’s controversy-laden film first hit the big screen in 1988, Passion tends to be regarded as a work in its own right rather than just being a movie soundtrack. It features additional music than was included in the film; this extra material was the result of Peter continuing to record and to resolve “unfinished ideas”, hence the later arrival of the record.
