The Putney School is a co-educational boarding school for grades 9-12 founded in 1935 By Carmelita Hinton. We are a progressive school, in that we value the idea that education is something to be actively pursued rather than passively received.
Our Process. We have an intentional admissions process designed for each kind of student. Whether you’re a traditional applicant or an international student, or you’re applying in the middle of the school year, we’ve got everything you need to know.
The Putney School is an independent high school in Putney, Vermont. The school was founded in 1935 by Carmelita Hinton on the principles of the Progressive Education movement and the teachings of its principal exponent, John Dewey.
Pathways. We operate on a trimester system, in which a 2-trimester course counts as 1 credit and a 1-trimester course counts as .5 credits. Students take on average 4 courses in a trimester and must earn at least 5 credits per year. For more on our graduation requirements, visit Expectations.

We are an independent 9–12 private boarding and day school situated in southeastern Vermont that has spent 85 years on the forefront of progressive education. We work to set up students for their own success.
