On Matthew Dear’s Black City you’ll find yourself amidst such an absorbing experience. Dear engrosses listeners into muddled scenery of warped techno-goo that we not only cannot escape, but one we don’t even want to. That’s probably the best way to describe what Dear does.
On Black City, Matthew Dear constructs a world of dark, druggy lullabies and gothic disco anthems. Though it hops from style to style, the album maintains an extremely dark feel--even in the face of highly danceable beats.
