Hace 4 días · The settlement at this point, out of which developed the borough of Stratford-upon-Avon, was part of the manor and parish of Old Stratford, which comprised also the hamlets of Shottery, Luddington, Dodwell, Drayton, Bishopton, Clopton, Welcombe, Ruin Clifford, and Bridgetown, besides the isolated hamlet of Bushwood, now in the parish of Lapworth.
Hace 4 días · The Tramway Bridge at Stratford was built in 1823, (fn. 204) the line was opened to Moreton in 1826 and the branch line to Shipston in 1836. In 1847 the tramway was taken over, on a lease, by the Oxford, Worcester, and Wolverhampton Railway Company. The receipts then averaged about £3,000 a year.
Hace 2 días · The Stratford-upon-Avon Borough Act of 1879, which transferred to the corporation the powers of the local Board of Health, increased the numbers to 7 aldermen and 18 councillors. (fn. 230) Under the Ministry of Health Order of 1924 by which Alveston was included within the borough, the corporate body now consists of a mayor, 8 aldermen, and 21 councillors.
