The name derives from the ancient Greek ἀρχαῖος ( archaīos ), meaning "ancient", and πτέρυξ ( ptéryx ), meaning "feather" or "wing".

The Department of Interior issued the first list of endangered species in March 1967. It included 14 mammals, 36 birds, 6 reptiles, 6 amphibians, and 22 fish.
