Jeter, seeking to describe the works of himself, Tim Powers, and James Blaylock that were set in a romanticized, re-imagined Victorian era[1]. It drew inspiration from the scientific romances of the likes of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells , as well as the Victorian-era perspectives on fashion, culture, art, and architecture[1][3].
