The mill at the North Bridge apparently formed part of the endowment of the college of St. Mary de Castro and was therefore probably in existence at the beginning of the 12th century. It was given to Leicester Abbey upon its foundation in 1143. A mill called St. Leonard's Mill is mentioned in the borough records about 1292.
