While I’m a complete devotee/ fanatic for Mr Van Vliet’s work (up to and including ‘Trout Mask Replica’), it’s very difficult to reconcile the music with the mental and physical abuse the Magic Band members endured under his leadership.

Guitarist Bill Harkleroad later admitted that he, along with his bandmates, went so far as to take lessons from Vliet about everything from how to play their instruments, to how to properly hold a cigarette (Harkleroad, 2000 , 33).
