For the project, she brought back Stephen Bray―with whom she had worked on her previous album Like a Virgin (1984)―and the Virgin Tour's musical director, producer Patrick Leonard. Prior to working with Madonna, Leonard had worked on the Jacksons' 1984 Victory Tour.

The group was formed in Sydney in 1972 by Hirst, Moginie and original bassist Andrew James as Farm: they enlisted Garrett the following year, changed their name in 1976, and hired Rotsey a year later.
