Hace 5 días · This sounds very much like The Great Judge, a short story by A.E. van Vogt, first published in 1948. It has been anthologised several times, notably in Away and Beyond . The story concerns a scientist called Douglas Aird, who has developed a way of transferring consciousness from one body to another.

He sold the story to Ace Books, and it was published in 1955 as one half of an Ace Double – there was another novel with it, if you turned it upside down.
