Hace 2 días · Tolkien's use of runes, both as decorative devices and as magical signs within the story, has been cited as a major cause for the popularization of runes within "New Age" and esoteric literature, stemming from Tolkien's popularity with the elements of counter-culture in the 1970s.
I played around with a similar idea for one of my stories. I found it easiest to make a set list of rules to define how magic works in-universe. For example: ->Magic can only be cast through specific runes. ->Runes must be drawn with specific (and rare/expensive) ink. ->Runes must be touched with at least one finger to activate.
