Australopithecus africanus es una especie extinta de hominino de Sudáfrica. Su nombre significa «mono del sur de África». Los primeros restos fósiles, el cráneo de un niño conocido como el niño de Taung, fueron descubiertos en 1924 por Raymond Dart en Taung, Sudáfrica, 1 pero no fue tomado en cuenta hasta 30 años después.

Australopithecus africanus is an extinct species of australopithecine which lived between about 3.3 and 2.1 million years ago in the Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene of South Africa. The species has been recovered from Taung, Sterkfontein, Makapansgat, and Gladysvale.

Australopithecus africanus was once considered to be a direct ancestor of modern humans but new finds have challenged this position. Many scientists now believe this species represents a side branch in our evolutionary family tree but there is disagreement about its exact relationship to other species.
4 de jul. de 2024 · In 1925 South African anthropologist Raymond Dart coined the genus name Australopithecus to identify a child’s skull recovered from mining operations at Taung in South Africa. He called it Australopithecus africanus, meaning “southern ape of Africa.”
