Medieval monks recorded tidal movements along the coast of England as early as 600 ce and correctly understood the relationship between the tides and the position of the sun and the phases of the moon.

During each tidal cycle, at any given place the water rises to a maximum height known as "high tide" before ebbing away again to the minimum "low tide" level.
