    The early Dire Straits records were done with a Stratocaster (and an occasional Telecaster) into old Fender-style amps (Music Man, for example) using amp reverb. Later he recorded a bunch of stuff with a Les Paul and started using "heavier" amps like Soldano and Marshall. AFAIK most or all of his distortion comes from his amps.
