The "Tonight Show" brand was so big under Carson, whenever ABC and CBS tried out competing late-night shows in the '60s and '70s, they came and went in fairly quick order. Even moreso, certain ABC and CBS affiliates in some cities just stopped airing network late-night programming or aired it on a delay to avoid direct competition with Johnny.
