Buchnera americana, commonly known as American bluehearts or bupleurum, is a locally endangered herbaceous perennial plant of the broomrape family Orobanchaceae. Found widely across the eastern United States, it also occurs in one location in the Canadian province of Ontario.

American bluehearts is an annual, single or few-stalked, unbranching wildflower of prairies and glades. It has distinctive, showy purple flowers that turn black as they age. The stem and leaves are hairy and rough to the touch and darken when injured or picked.

Bluehearts, Buchnera floridana, are most often found in coastal plains. These native wildflowers do best in fire-maintained ecosystems including flatwoods, pine savannas, and on roadsides. Violet-blue flowers bloom year-round atop 15 – 31 inch tall stems.
