Discovered by Charles Messier in 1773, M51 is noted for its well-defined spiral arms, which are highlighted by young, hot stars and stellar nurseries. The galaxy's distinctive structure is believed to result from its gravitational interaction with a smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195.
