A fan theory of mine. Trilogy Discussion. My theory is that Haymitch cared so much about Katniss surviving because he had seen a first-hand reaction to losing a sister - Mrs Undersee's reaction. Maysilee died in the 2nd Quarter Quell, Haymitch's game, and thus Mrs Undersee and Haymitch are presumably similar ages.
