Hace 4 días · The Magic Band was the backing band of Captain Beefheart between 1967 and 1982. The rotating lineup featured dozens of performers, many of whom became known by nicknames given to them by Beefheart. Ex-members of the Magic Band formed the short-lived group Mallard in 1974.
Hace 3 días · In 1965, Vliet signed a contract with A&M Records under the name Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (Barnes, 2000, 17). After achieving little under this arrangement, the band signed with Bob Krasnow’s Buddah label, and in 1968 their debut album, Safe as Milk, appeared (Barnes, 2000, 30).

While I’m a complete devotee/ fanatic for Mr Van Vliet’s work (up to and including ‘Trout Mask Replica’), it’s very difficult to reconcile the music with the mental and physical abuse the Magic Band members endured under his leadership.
