Hace 1 día · The underlying rock is sandstone of the Millstone Grit series, which outcrops on the west side of the township at Ramshaw Rocks and near Newstone Farm. A shallow basin of the Coal Measures overlies the rock in the Blue Hills area along the western boundary.
Hace 1 día · In the south-eastern half of the township the subsoil consists of the Millstone Grit, in the north-western half of the Yoredale Rocks; the soil is of clay. The land consists of meadow and pasture with bent grass and heath on Wilpshire Moor. (fn. 1) The area is 1,002 acres, and the population in 1901 numbered 594 persons. (fn. 2)
Hace 2 días · MILLSTONE GRIT. This formation comprises beds of hard close-grained grit or quartzite with ferruginous specks, and with subordinate beds of shale and occasional seams of coal. It has received the name of 'Farewell Rock,' from the fact that when reached in mining there is no longer any chance of getting profitable coal.

As cited in this Country Life article, a visitor in 1771 described Plumpton Rocks as ‘uncommonly Romantic’:
