Hace 4 días · “Based” originally stemmed from the term “basehead,” which described people addicted to freebasing cocaine. Over time, calling someone “based” meant they were a crack addict or acted like one, predominantly in West Coast street slang. However, the current meaning no longer carries this negative connotation.

The best part about "based" is that it's a reclaimed term; it used to be slang for "crackhead" basically (freebase cocaine -> basehead -> based). Until a brave young man and rapper from Oakland, Lil B the BasedGod, got tired of being called "based" and proclaimed that being based was gonna be cool now.
