He was raised by his parents, Diana Mosley and Bryan Guinness, 2nd Baron Moyne, along with his two siblings, Desmond Guinness and Max Mosley. Guinness received his education at Eton College and the University of Oxford.

In 1898 Canon Grenside erected on the north wall a wooden panel on which is inscribed: 'In this chancel rest the remains of Thomas Stanley, second Baron Mounteagle of Hornby Castle, who died in the month of August 1560.
