The abbey is situated on the slopes of the valley to the south of the road. An embattled footbridge with a two-centred drop arch spans the road near the main entrance.

Not wishing to have a sabbatical year, he went straight to School of Architecture University of Newcastle upon Tyne where he completed a BA (Hons), Bachelor of Architecture and, later, a MArch.
