Despite this, I found Altman's detached, somewhat frivolous bird's-eye rendition of these stories strange and comprised, even though it's consistent with his style. Despite Carver's voice being somewhat detached from his characters, his stories are quiet, intimate, and pretty emotionally devastating, or at least touching in one way or another.
