I knew from his first solo that this was a guy to watch — he had a piercing sound on alto sax, with “the cry” that marks the work of so many players I love — Wayne Shorter, Johnny Griffin, Booker Ervin, David “Fathead” Newman, and the man who primarily influenced him, Hank Crawford.

In the 1970s he performed as a sideman with BB King, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, James Taylor, James Brown, Paul Simon, Eagles, Elton John, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Stealy Dan, Grateful Dead, and many others.

It peaked at #123 on the Billboard album chart.. In late 1964, Joe Boyd, an aspiring producer and friend of Elektra house producer Paul Rothchild, told Rothchild that the “best band in the world was on stage at a blues bar in Chicago.”
