And like Hendrix, Trower had paid his dues as a more-or-less backup musician, his former band Procol Harum having emphasized stately organ and piano rather than guitar.

He was always a great guitarist but he had to invent a different way of playing for the music that I’d written for Procol’s first, second and third albums.
