Er verfeinerte beim Essex-Label seinen Bandstil mit den Rocknummern Real Rock Drive und, erstmals mit Saxophonbesetzung, Live It Up , und konnte sich dann im Sommer 1953 mit seinem Song Crazy Man, Crazy in den Nation’s Top Twenty-Charts platzieren.
