Seis años después, en 1999, los promotores Paul Tollett y Rick Van Santen decidieron crear el primer festival Coachella inspirados por el éxito de Pearl Jam y por otros festivales europeos como Glastonbury o Reading. El cartel inaugural contó con bandas como Beck, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Morrissey o The Chemical Brothers.
