He learned this in 1843 as a teenaged shoemaker’s apprentice in Poughkeepsie, when a local tailor, inspired by a traveling mesmerist (what we’d now call a hypnotist), experimented on Davis and found him easily mesmerized.

Andrew Jackson Davis was born August 11, 1826 in Blooming Grove, New York. After a series of psychic experiences, he moved to Poughkeepsie, New York and became an ardent Spiritualist known popularly as "The Poughkeepsie Seer." Davis was a prolific writer and lecturer on Spiritualist and socially progressive topics.

Davis claimed that he had very little in the way of education, other than a short stint at a school in Hyde Park in the 1830s, when his family moved there for a time.
