Rudolf Otto se narodil se v Peine, města nedaleko Hannoveru. Jeho otec se jmenoval Wilhelm Otto a měl se svou ženou třináct dětí, Rudolf byl dvanáctým narozeným. Studoval gymnázium v Hildesheimu. Roku 1888 zde maturoval a poté začal studovat teologii na univerzitě v Erlangenu. Po roce však přestoupil na univerzitu v Göttingenu.
Rudolf Otto war der Sohn eines Malzfabrikanten. Nach dem Abitur am humanistischen Gymnasium Andreanum in Hildesheim [2] begann Otto im Mai 1888 an der Universität Erlangen das Studium der Theologie. Später wechselte er an die Universität Göttingen. 1898 wurde er mit einer Arbeit über Geist und Wort bei Luther zum Lic. theol. promoviert.
