Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama, on Sept. 3, 1944, when she was abducted and gang-raped by six white men. The crime, which N.A.A.C.P. activist Rosa Parks investigated and which garnered extensive coverage in the black press, never saw the indictment of the accused.
In 1944 Alabama, Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys. She spoke up at the time and identified her rapists. The NAACP sent Rosa Parks, their chief investigator, to look into the case, triggering an unprecedented outcry for justice.
Recy Taylor was born as Recy Corbitt on December 31, 1919. She grew up in Abbeville, Alabama to a sharecropping family. When she was 17 years old, her mother died and she was left to take care of her six younger siblings. As a young woman, she married Willie Guy Taylor and in 1941, the couple welcomed their daughter Joyce Lee.
