Felix Mendelssohn föddes 3 februari 1809 i Hamburg som son till Lea, född Salomon, och bankmannen Abraham Mendelssohn (son till den judiske filosofen Moses Mendelssohn ). Då Felix var två år flyttade familjen till Berlin på grund av de politiska händelserna i Europa, och där skulle han leva under återstoden av sin barn- och ungdom.
