Elizabeth Ashley graduierte an der Louisiana State University und dem Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.Zunächst arbeitete sie als Model und Tänzerin, startete dann aber eine Karriere am Broadway und entwickelte sich zu einer bedeutenden Interpretin von Tennessee Williams auf der Bühne.
