Hopkins may have enjoyed unprecedented world-wide popularity as a blues and folk artist during the 1960s, but his best work was mostly recorded in the previous two decades. This Rhino selection, put together by James Austin, culls tracks recorded for labels such as Aladdin, Sittin' In With, Gold Star, Jax, Folkways and Bluesville, from 1946 to 1961.
The Very Best of duplicates seven tracks from that release and focuses on Hopkins' work from 1947 to 1961, but offers enough new material to make this a worthwhile purchase. And with Hopkins' lack of loyalty to any one record label, no fewer than seven different labels are represented on this 16-track collection.

Hopkins plays piano on "Mighty Crazy", on "Shotgun Blues," he has a second guitarist, and on "Conversation Blues" and "Last Night Blues" he has a full band of bass, drums and harmonica (Sonny Terry). These sıdes were recorded for; Aladdin Records, including his 1950 hit "Shotgun Blues"; the Sittin' In With label, including 1952's "Give Me Central 209" and "Coffee Blues"; and Jax Records.
