The Blood Stripe Myth BLUF: According to Marine Corps lore, the red stripe worn by Marine Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) represents the blood spilled by Marines in 1847 during the Battle of Chapultapec. Although this belief is firmly embedded in the traditions of the Marine Corps, it has no basis.
