  5. Nina Hamnett studierte von 1906 bis 1907 an der Pelham Art School und darauf an der London School of Art bis 1910. Vor dem Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs reiste Hamnett nach Frankreich, wo sie in Paris an der Marie Vassilieffs Académie Kunstgeschichte studierte. Faces were her forte, and a portrait of the dancer Rupert Doone, completed in 1923, is one of the standouts in a new exhibition of her work opening May 19 at Charleston, in East Sussex—you can almost hear the imperious Hmmm forming on Doone’s plump, Pre-Raphaelite lips.
