The Family That Plays Together est le deuxième des quatre albums studio enregistrés par la formation originale du groupe de rock américain Spirit.. Peu après la sortie de l'album, les mix finaux ont été égarés. À cause de cela, toutes les sorties CD de Sony, tout comme les repressages vinyles de Sundazed Records, proviennent de nouveaux mix (de Bob Irwin) issus des cassettes originales.
Spirit (1968) and The Family That Plays Together (1969) toyed with an erudite fusion of blues, jazz, raga and rock, while Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicous (1971) marked a move towards overwrought (and electronic) arrangements. Ed Cassidy died in 2012 at the age of 89.

A fact that has made me perennially frustrated, till the release of this hybrid SACD masterfully remastered by Steve Hoffman. The Family That Plays Together is not merely a "new, improved" version of the group's first album, though it features those very qualities that had made Spirit an undisputed classic.
