The group's third album, 2004's eponymous Phantom Planet, introduced drummer Jeff Conrad. Produced by Dave Fridmann, it found them adopting a more garage rock-oriented sound. It peaked at number 95 on the Billboard 200. Following the album's release, guitarist Brautbar left the band and took on film scoring work and other musical collaborations.
