"The Unloved" is a character-driven polemic, perhaps almost too didactic for its own good, and doesn't sport much in the way of mainstream appeal (much like its subject, I suppose). Still, it's a very well done piece, and worth a viewing, if only to remind yourself that it's a very good thing to not be one of the unloved in this world.

Unloved is an American alternative music trio formed in Los Angeles in 2015, by American musicians Jade Vincent and Keefus Ciancia, and the Northern Irish musician, David Holmes. The Unloved, screened on Channel 4 last year and now receiving a cinema release, is firmly in the ‘gritty British realism’ genre, inspired by her own experiences in a children’s home in Nottingham but clearly influenced by directors such as Ken Loach and Lynne Ramsay (who made the bleakly beautiful Ratcatcher and directed Morton in Morvern Callar).
