El termino Munchausen fue propuesto por primera vez en el año 1951, por Dr.Richard Asher, en una publicación médica sobre pacientes que buscaban atención médica, con historias, síntomas y hallazgos por el examinador, que planteaban serias inconsistencias, y que luego de un difícil y extenso análisis médico, se demostraba, que eran producidos por el mismo paciente.
