Mike Heidorn lives in Belleville, Ill., not far from the neighborhood where he lent his punk gunfire drumming to Uncle Tupelo for its first three albums. Over a three-hour lunch at a local restaurant with his band's framed album covers on the wall, Heidorn talks as fast as he drummed for the band.
For Son Volt, Farrar recovered drummer Mike Heidorn, who had left Uncle Tupelo after the third album, and enlisted brothers Jim (bass) and Dave (guitar, fiddle, banjo, etc.) Boquist, who had previously worked with Joe Henry. (Pedal steel player/guitar tech Eric Heywood would become a de facto member.)
I found Heidorn at the bar, and just like a good American, he was concerned about the fate of Braves/Astros playoff game. Brian Knight: Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Where do you call home these days? Mike Heidorn: Southern Illinois, in Belleville which is just east of East St. Louis. The band is from all over the area.

There's always the theorizing that Uncle Tupelo might've been able to stay together if Heidorn had never left, since he functioned as the affable glue that held two tempestuous artists together. But heck, he wasn't able to keep the original line-up of Son Volt together once Farrar and the Boquist brothers got to loggerheads, so I suspect Tupelo was doomed whether Mike stuck around or not.
