Lawford was the only child of Lieutenant-General Sir Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford, KBE (1865-1953) and May Aylen (née May Sommerville Bunny, 1883-1972). At the time of Lawford's birth, however, his mother was married to her second husband, Dr. Capt. Ernest Vaughn Aylen, one of Sir Sidney's officers, while his father was married to the former Muriel Williams.

Sir Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford, KCB (16 November 1865 – 15 February 1953) was a British Army officer, and the father of movie star Peter Lawford. He was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. His first marriage was on 30 September 1893, at St. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, London to Lillian Maud Cass, who died on 26 November 1900.
Lieutenant-General Sir Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford, KCB (16 November 1865 – 15 February 1953), was a decorated British general, later to become the father of Hollywood actor Peter Lawford.
