El título original del cuadro era La compañía militar del capitán Frans Banninck Cocq y el teniente Willem van Ruytenburgh, pero reconozcamos que no era un título muy pegadizo por lo que desde el XIX popularmente se empezó a conocer con el carismático nombre de Night Watch.
