Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ist eine australische Rockband, die 1983 vom Sänger Nick Cave, dem Multiinstrumentalisten Mick Harvey und dem Gitarristen Blixa Bargeld nach Auflösung von The Birthday Party gegründet wurde. Der Name basiert auf dem Kriminalroman The Bad Seed von William March, der 1956 unter dem gleichen Titel – deutsch: Böse Saat – auch verfilmt wurde.
Lider zespołu Cave przeprowadził się z Melbourne do Londynu w 1980. Od czasu utworzenia The Bad Seeds w 1984 mieszkał w Berlinie, São Paulo, Londynie oraz Brighton. Narodowości obecnych oraz byłych członków zespołu to: Australijczycy: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Tracy Pew, Rowland S. Howard, Hugo Race, Conway Savage i Warren Ellis.

Nel 2007, quattro membri della band, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey e Jim Sclavunos, fondarono i Grinderman con cui pubblicarono due album. Nel 2008, venne pubblicato, di nuovo dai The Bad Seeds, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, in seguito alla cui uscita, dopo oltre vent'anni di collaborazione, il membro fondatore Mick Harvey abbandonò la band.
