The lower enclosure, where you enter the complex, was built during the eighteenth century and houses the Revellín del Bon Repós and a large white marble shield rescued from the ruins of the Royal Consulate of the Sea, which was destroyed by an explosion in 1943.
In 1943 she met her future husband, the journalist Edward (Ted) Castle (1907-79), after he placed a report of her speech to the Labour conference on the front page of the Daily Mirror. They were married in 1944. In 1944, the newly named, Mrs Barbara Castle was adopted as one of the two Labour prospective parliamentary candidates for Blackburn.

Barbara Castle was the Member of Parliament for Blackburn from 1945 - 1979. Often described as 'radical' and 'outspoken', she paved the way for women in politics. Barbara Anne Betts was born in Yorkshire in 1910. Her father was a tax-inspector with strong socialist ideals.
