31 de mar. de 2019 · Alan Shepard was part of the first group of seven astronauts selected by NASA in 1959, then a nascent agency created to secure America's place in the Space Race against the former Soviet Union. Shepard, a military test pilot, became the first American to fly in space in 1961, and then went to the Moon in 1971 as commander of the Apollo 14 space mission.

Alan Shepard var en amerikansk astronaut. Han ble utdannet ved US Naval Academy i 1944, tok sin flygerutdanning i marinen og ble prøveflyger og instruktør. Shepard var en av sju Mercury-astronauter som ble utvalgt av NASA i 1959. Han var delaktig i to romferder. 5. mai 1961 ble Shepard den første amerikanske romfareren med en ferd på 15 minutter i ballistisk bane i Mercury-kapselen Freedom 7.
