POP · 1970. Joni Mitchell turned her gaze outward for an album sketching the post-hippie landscape at the dawn of the '70s. The title track gently pokes fun at her fellow Los Angeles bohemians, while the wistful "For Free" finds a successful singer-songwriter shown up by a street busker and "Woodstock" celebrates the gathering of her tribe.

That was the first time I lived in Laurel Canyon. It was the Summer of Love. What a time to try to take care of business. After that, music business had me going back and forth between the Grove and Laurel Canyon, every few months. It was during my second visit to the Canyon, in 1968, that Joni arrived, and wrote Ladies of the Canyon.
She is a lady of the canyon. Annie sits you down to eat. She always makes you welcome in. Cats and babies 'round her feet. And all are fat and none are thin. None are thin and all are fat. She may bake some brownies today. Saying you are welcome back. She is another canyon lady.

For now, I'll spare you the white knuckle details of Crosby's remarkable ability to convert every turn in the canyon into Dead Man's Curve. I'd always arrive at least 10 times a Whiter Shade Of Pale. So, Crosby took me there the day before Joni wrote Ladies Of The Canyon, and Crosby also picked me up on the day she completed the song.
