Overview. The department teaches two independent yet inter-related subjects one (Government & Politics) of which is currently confined to the latter stages of students’ time at the college while the other (History) is available to all students right throughout their seven years at the College should they choose. History is study of the past.
3. St. Colman’s College was founded by Fr. J.S. Keenan in William Street, Newry in 1823 as the Dromore Diocesan Seminary. The Education Commissioners’ Enquiry of 1824 recorded an enrolment of some 40 pupils. Known throughout Ireland asViolet Hill, the College has occupied its magnificent rural setting since 1829.

St Colman’s College was founded on 12 th May 1823.. Wednesday 10 th May 2023 saw the commencement of events to mark the College’s Bicentenary Year – a special milestone in the history of Violet Hill College.. A sea of blue blazers made their way from the College to Newry Cathedral as part of a Sponsored Walk, with over 600 pupils and staff taking part.
